I was going to post about how I’m exhausted because my 3 year old has suddenly started to act like a 3 year old. If you thought the twos were terrible, three is worse. (Might I say, we had a very mild two with the Little Kidlet, so perhaps he is just getting caught up) I was also going to post Halloween pictures (tomorrow!). But today I got a flyer from the school mixed in with all of the Oldest Kidlet’s artwork that I thought I should share.

The school has had a rash of break-ins at cars in their parking lot. This, despite the fact that there’s usually a parent standing nearby and video surveillance. The most recent happened Friday afternoon. I share this because it was when the lot was full of people there to help the school set up for their Halloween Carnival. Even worse, the woman whose car was broken into was standing nearby. Nobody saw or heard a thing.

From the video, this is what they observed. The man waited in his car until he saw a woman leave her car without a purse. He drove and parked nearby and walked by to see if there was a purse. He then got back into the car, drove so that his car was parked opposite hers in the next aisle. He got out of the driver’s side, left the door open, walked up to her passenger side. In one motion, he smashed the window and grabbed the purse, then returned to his car and drove off- which only took seconds.

I know, nobody who reads this blog actually has a kid at my school- but it’s a good reminder that we leave a lot of things in our cars because we rationalize that we’ll be right back. I used to leave my purse/diaper bag in the car because I figured I’d be back in 5 minutes and the lot had video surveillance. But it always seems like parking lot thieves like this guy are fast and have learned how to be pretty quiet- so it’s a good reminder not to keep valuables out in view and to carry bags with you. Especially if, like me, you carry medications a child or for yourself.
